22. LEGISLATIVE BILLS THAT WOULD AFFECT THE PRESS

There are no official bills for legal or constitutional reform or for amendment of codes or decrees that affect the press in the future.

However, there was once a group of initiatives known as ?Gag Law? which sought to increase the penalties for violations of law involving defamation and would have established sanctions of up to six years in prison and fines which could have totaled up to US$200,000, in addition to forcing the newspaper companies to contract insurance for US$500,000 to cover possible damages.
