6. MANDATORY LICENSING AND UNIVERSITY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

The Constitution says that every Nicaraguan has the right to choose and freely practice his profession or trade and to choose his place of work with no further requirement than that he have academic qualifications and he carry out a social role (Article 86).

There is no legal requirement for a professional degree or obligatory membership of a colegio for journalists at this time.

In 1994 and 1996 there were attempts to introduce bills in the legislature seeking to make colegio membership mandatory (see Point 22).
