22. LEGISLATIVE BILLS THAT WOULD AFFECT THE PRESS

In a letter to the House of Representatives dated February 1998, the government gave its support for a bill currently before the House of Representatives? Criminal Law Committee.

This bill seeks to amend the current Code of Evidence, particularly Rule 28-A of the Rules of Evidence of 1979, by establishing the confidentiality of news sources. The bill would define what is meant by a journalist, his source and confidential communication. As a result of this privilege, a journalist would not have to reveal the name, address or location of any source.
