15. ETHIC CODES OR SELFREGULATION
The Society of Professional Journalists adopted in 1926 a comprehensive
Code of Ethics that serves as a guideline for journalists today.
Designed to ensure reporters retain the highest degree of integrity,
the code sets forth various responsibilities and prohibited behavior
for journalists.
It prohibits journalists from accepting gifts, favors, free
travel or other privileges that could compromise their integrity.
It discourages secondary employment and political involvement. It
encourages journalists to seek news that serves the public interest,
to always protect confidential sources and to substantiate all claims
from private sources. It provides that plagiarism is dishonest and
unacceptable. It also mandates that journalists at all times show
respect for the dignity, privacy and well-being of people they encounter
in gathering news. It is purely voluntary.
