The Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information–the core of the IAPA–monitors challenges to and violations of press freedom throughout the Western Hemisphere and develops appropriate responses.

Each country has a regional vice chairman who reports to the Committee on issues and events affecting the press in his or her country. The reports are discussed and analyzed twice yearly–at the IAPA Midyear Meeting, held in the spring, and the General Assembly, which meets in October. The Committee reports its conclusions and recommendations to the Board of Directors, which decides on a course of action.

Response to a threat or challenge to press freedom can range from a simple resolution announcing that the organization is aware of and vigilant in responding to a potential threat, to sending a special mission of members to conduct additional investigations and/or to take the issue directly to those responsible for the problem. The Commit-tee’s annual report of abuses of the press is considered the most comprehensive document of its kind.
