Departure: 2:30 p.m.
Length: 2 ½ hours
Today, you will join all the delegates in visiting the impressive new printing facilities of The Washington Post. Founded by independent-minded Democrat Stilson Hutchins, The Washington Post began publishing on December 6, 1877, and had a circulation of 10,000. The newspaper contained four pages and cost three cents a copy. Today, The Washington Post Company is a diversified media organization whose principal operations include newspaper and magazine publishing, television broadcasting, cable television systems, electronic information services, test preparation, and educational career services. This tour will take you to where the newsprint arrives by train, unloaded and stored. Then, you will get a chance to see where the newspaper is actually printed on the largest, most technologically advanced newspaper presses in the world. Finally, the tour will show visitors how the 96-page newspaper is assembled, stacked, and prepared for distribution.
