14. PUBLIC INFORMATION AND ACCESS TO GOVERNMENT INFORMATION

Access to information legislation has been passed at the federal, provincial and municipal levels to provide that records under the control of a government institution should be available to the public. However, access to these records must be sought through application because there are various exceptions to the right of access. Reasons for these limits include confidentiality, privacy, information that may be injurious to Canada, information relating to military operations, defense and intelligence, and information that may affect third party interests. While these access to information statutes have been used by the media to reveal important information, access to information can be expensive to pursue and take a long time to achieve.
