22. LEGISLATIVE BILLS THAT WOULD AFFECT THE PRESS

In 1998 the federal government commenced an initiative to pass legislation intended to protect the use of personal information in the private sector. The proposed legislation would prevent the use of ?personal information? for purposes other than for which it was collected with the consent of the person it concerns. While the proposed limits would affect all information collected by any business, including information collected for the purpose of the business of a media company, lobbying by the media resulted in an exemption in the draft legislation for information collected for journalistic purposes.
