2. SPECIFIC PRESS LAWS

The specific law on the press is Law 16,099 of November 3, 1989, titled ?Communications and Information.?

It consists of six chapters and 38 articles. It legislates on freedom of the press and printing, right of reply, crimes committed by the press or other news media and procedures.

According to Article 1, the expression and communication of thought and opinion and the dissemination of information by word of mouth, in writing or image by any means of communication is entirely free in every respect, within the limits enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic and under the law. This includes the right to found news media.

Prior authorization, censorship, guarantee or monetary deposit to exercise such freedom is prohibited under Article 2.

The Day of the Journalist is regulated under Law 16,154 of October 23, 1990: ?October 23 of each year is declared Day of the Journalist, which shall be a paid holiday for journalists.?
