CHILE
WHEREAS
two journalists have received death threats for publishing articles about a
municipal government in Santiago
WHEREAS
the newspaper El Periodista, which is run by one of the journalists who received
death threats, was the victim of a bizarre burglary
WHEREAS
Article 4 of the Declaration of Chapultepec states, “Freedom of expression
and of the press are severely limited by murder, terrorism, kidnapping, pressure,
intimidation, the unjust imprisonment of journalists, the destruction of facilities,
violence of any kind and impunity for perpetrators. Such acts must be investigated
promptly and punished harshly”
THE GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE IAPA RESOLVES
to request
that the Chilean Minister of the Interior, as the highest authority for maintaining
public order, carry out an investigation with the utmost vigor into these threats
and the burglary of El Periodista, as it is vital to stop such actions whenever
they occur and to prevent impunity from lending greater strength to groups that
attempt to intimidate and silence journalists.
