IAPA examines press freedom situation in Argentina

 

Miami (February 28, 2005).- The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) began on Monday a series of meetings in Argentina with government officials and members of the Judicial and Legislative branches; political opposition leaders; representatives from the local media; and journalists, to openly scope the situation on freedom of the press in the country.

 

During their stay in the country, the IAPA delegation, led by its president, Alejandro Miró Quesada, will visit Buenos Aires on February 28 to March 2, where they will deal with the issue of distribution of government advertising and will also meet with Congressmen from the House of Representatives and Senate to present the organization’s position on the legislative bill on access to public information, which will be soon be debated by the House.

 

After finishing activities in Buenos Aires, the IAPA will travel on Thursday, March 3, to Neuquén province, where they will hold meetings with newspaper publishers, local officials and legislators, and other influential figures, to discuss complaints about press freedom in the interior of the country.

 

Besides Miró Quesada, from El Comercio, Lima, Peru, the delegation is comprised of:

Gonzalo Marroquín, chairman of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Prensa Libre, Guatemala; former IAPA presidents, Danilo Arbilla, Búsqueda, Uruguay; Robert J. Cox, The Post & Courier, Charleston, South Carolina; and Edward Seaton, Seaton Newspapers, Manhattan, Kansas; Roberto Rock, of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information in Mexico, El Universal, Mexico City, Mexico; and Ricardo Trotti, Press Freedom Director.
