CATEDRA DE LAS AMERICAS CONTINUA EL 28 DE JUNIO CON EL PRESIDENTE DE LA SOCIEDAD INTERAMERICANA DE PRENSA (SIP)
Alejandro Miró Quesada, Presidente de la Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP), y Director del diario El Comercio del Perú será el orador principal de la sexta Cátedra de las Américas el próximo martes 28 de junio de 2005. Miró Quesada hablará sobre periodismo y gobernabilidad en América Latina y el Caribe.
Periodista y abogado peruano con estudios en Derecho y Ciencias Políticas en las universidades Católica y Nacional Mayor de San Marcos del Perú, Miró Quesada, es también miembro del Comité Ejecutivo y del Consejo de Honor de la Junta Directiva del Consejo de la Prensa Peruana, entidad que agrupa a los principales medios de comunicación escrita de ese país.
Terminada la conferencia, Alejandro Miró Quesada responderá a preguntas de la prensa y del auditorio en general. Inmediatamente después se realizará una mesa redonda en la cual se analizará la presentación de Miró Quesada con los panelistas: Peter Eisner, Subeditor Internacional del Washington Post; Hugo Guerra, periodista y abogado de la Universidad San Martín de Porres del Perú y Paulo Sotero, corresponsal en Washington para O Estado de S. Paulo. Eduardo Bertoni, Relator Especial para la Libertad de Expresión de la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos de la OEA, será el moderador.
La Cátedra de las Américas fue creada por el Consejo Permanente de la OEA por iniciativa del gobierno peruano, con el objeto de promover los principios y valores democráticos en los países del hemisferio. Las conferencias mensuales a cargo de personalidades internacionalmente reconocidas se enfocan en temas centrales de la agenda hemisférica, tales como el fortalecimiento de la democracia, derechos humanos, desarrollo social, seguridad hemisférica y lucha contra la pobreza. Las doce conferencias planeadas para el 2005 son realizadas gracias a la contribución financiera de la Universidad San Martín de Porres del Perú y cuentan también con el apoyo del gobierno de China.
Las presentaciones anteriores estuvieron a cargo del ex Presidente de los Estados Unidos, Jimmy Carter; Presidente del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), Enrique Iglesias; Presidente de la Corte Penal Internacional, Philippe Kirsch; Premio Nóbel de Literatura, Derek Walcott; y del ex Subsecretario del Tesoro para Asuntos Internacionales de Estados Unidos, John B. Taylor.

IAPA President to be Keynote Speaker at OAS Event Miami (June 24, 2005).- The president of the Inter American Press Association, Alejandro Miró Quesada C., publisher of the Peruvian daily El Comercio, was invited by the Organization of American States (OAS) to speak on Journalism and Good Governance in Latin America and The Caribbean at the Sixth Lecture of The Lecture Series of the Americas to be held next week in Washington, D.C.

PRESIDENT OF INTER-AMERICAN PRESS ASSOCIATION TO HEADLINE
NEXT LECTURE JUNE 28 HIGHLIGHTING JOURNALISM AND GOVERNANCE
Alejandro Miró Quesada, President of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), will headline the 6th conference in the monthly Lecture Series of the Americas, on June 28. The topic is Journalism and Good Governance in Lain America and the Caribbean. It will be webcast live from the Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters in Washington, D.C.
A Peruvian journalist and lawyer, Miró Quesada is also Publisher of Perus El Comercio newspaper and a member of the Executive Committee as well as Honor Council of the Board of Directors of the Peruvian Press Council, an umbrella organization for Perus main print media. He holds degrees in law and political sciences from universities in Peru.
Following the conference, Miró Quesada will take questions from the media and the general audience, immediately after which the conference topic will be the focus of a roundtable discussion by Peter Eisner, deputy foreign editor at the Washington Post; Hugo Guerra, journalist and lawyer, San Martin de Porres University of Peru; and Paulo Sotero, Washington correspondent for O Estado de S. Paulo and commentator for BBC radio; with Eduardo Bertoni, Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights at the OAS, as moderator.
The Lecture Series of the Americas was created by the OAS Permanent Council, on a Peruvian government initiative, to promote democratic principles and values in the countries of the hemisphere. The monthly conferences feature internationally known speakers who address key issues of the hemispheric agenda, such as the strengthening of democracy, human rights, social development, hemispheric security and the fight against poverty. The 12 conferences scheduled for 2005 are being held thanks to a financial contribution from Perus San Martín de Porres University and support from the government of the Peoples Republic of China.
Former US President Jimmy Carter, Inter-American Development Bank President Enrique Iglesias, International Criminal Court President Phillipe Kirsch, Nobel Laureate for Literature Derek Walcott of Saint Lucia and Former US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury John B. Taylor have been keynote speakers for the previous lectures, respectively.
