SIP alcanza acuerdo con Colombia para resolver asesinato de periodista
Washington DC (20 de octubre del 2005) La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa SIP) y el Estado de Colombia acordaron trabajar en conjunto para el esclarecimiento del asesinato contra un periodista ocurrido hace siete años.
Con la intercesión de la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH), la SIP y el Estado colombiano convinieron trabajar por una solución amistosa para atraer justicia al caso del periodista Nelson Carvajal Carvajal, asesinado el 16 de abril de 1998, sobre el cual la SIP viene reclamando la impunidad que rodea el caso desde el 2002 cuando lo presentó ante el organismo interamericano.
La presidenta de la SIP, Diana Daniels, del The Washington Post, Washington DC, expresó su beneplácito por la excelente voluntad política del gobierno que nos permitirá trabajar juntos para resolver no solo el caso de Carvajal, sino también contribuir a otros casos irresueltos y brindar una lucha global contra la impunidad en Colombia.
Con la presencia del secretario ejecutivo de la CIDH, Santiago Cantón y el relator especial para la Libertad de Expresión, Eduardo Bertoni, la reunión de trabajo reunió por Colombia al embajador ante la OEA, Alberto Tirado Mejía; en representación del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Colombia, Clara Inés Vargas; la directora de Asuntos Internacionales, Yolanda Sarmiento Amado y la directora de Derechos Humanos, Marisol Palacio. Por la SIP, además de Daniels también participó el director de Libertad de Prensa, Ricardo Trotti.
Al término de la reunión, se acordó conformar un equipo de trabajo conjunto, Estado y SIP, que sostendrá un primer encuentro el próximo 14 de diciembre en Bogotá para establecer un acuerdo marco y un calendario de actividades.
IAPA reaches agreement with Colombia in journalists murder case
WASHINGTON, DC (October 20, 2005). The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) and the Colombian government agreed today to work together to solve the case of the murder of a journalist committed seven years ago.
With the intercession of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), the IAPA and the Colombian state pledged to work towards an amicable agreement in order to bring justice in the case of journalist Nelson Carvajal Carvajal, murdered on April 16, 1998. The IAPA has been protesting the impunity surrounding this case since 2002 when it first submitted documents for consideration by the IACHR.
IAPA President Diana Daniels, of The Washington Post Company, Washington, DC, said she was delighted at the excellent political will of the government, which will enable us to work together to solve not only the Carvajal case but will contribute to solving other outstanding cases and provide a global perspective in combating impunity in Colombia.
In the presence of IACHR Executive Secretary Santiago Cantón and Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression Eduardo Bertoni, the working session brought together for Colombia the countrys ambassador to the Organization of American States, Alberto Tirado Mejía; representing the Ministry of Foreign Relations Clara Inés Vargas; Director of International Affairs Yolanda Sarmiento Amado, and Director of Human Rights Marisol Palacio. Taking part for the IAPA in addition to Daniels was IAPA Press Freedom Director Ricardo Trotti.
At the end of the meeting it was agreed to set up an IAPA/Colombian state joint working-group, which will hold its first meeting on December 14 in Bogotá, Colombia, to draw up the framework for an agreement and a timeline of activities.
