La SIP condena asesinato contra periodista en Guyana
Miami (3 de febrero del 2006) -- La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) lamentó y condenó el asesinato del periodista Ronald Waddell en Guyana esta semana y exhortó a las autoridades a esclarecer los móviles del crimen y llevar a los responsables ante la justicia.
Waddell, de 57 años, ex conductor de un programa de televisión en HBTV canal 9, fue asesinado en su vehículo frente a su vivienda el 30 de enero. La prensa local informó que dos sujetos que habrían estado vigilando los movimientos del periodista, se le acercaron cuando éste ingresaba en su automóvil y le dispararon a quemarropa.
El presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información, Gonzalo Marroquín, expresó su solidaridad con la familia del periodista y exhortó a las autoridades a realizar una investigación expedita y aplicar el peso de la ley contra los asesinos.
El programa de televisión de Waddell fue suspendido en noviembre pasado. Waddell era también un conocido activista por los derechos de ciudadanos de origen africano, fue candidato a diputado y en sus actividades, también como periodista, criticaba las políticas del presidente Bharrat Jagdeo, quien rechazó cualquier presunto vínculo del asesinato con el partido de gobierno.
El periodista también había denunciado la existencia en el país de escuadrones de la muerte. La policía confirmó que examina este ángulo en sus investigaciones, aunque se desconoce el móvil del asesinato.
Marroquín, director del diario guatemalteco Prensa Libre, expresó que los asesinatos contra periodistas, deben ser investigados con prontitud y sancionados con severidad, según lo consigna el quinto principio de la Declaración de Chapultepec, firmada por el presidente Jagdeo el 24 de mayo del 2002.

Miami (February 3, 2006) The Inter American Press Association mourned and condemned the murder of reporter Ronald Waddell in Guyana this week and demanded that authorities solve the motives of this crime and bring those responsible to justice.
Waddell, 57 years old, former host of a television program on HBTV Channel 9, was killed in his vehicle in front of his home on January 30. Local press reported that two suspects that were following the journalist approached him as he was entering his auto and shot him at close range.
The chairman of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Gonzalo Marroquín, expressed his solidarity to the journalists family and demanded that officials conduct a speedy investigation and apply the fullest extent of the law against the murderers.
Waddells television program was cancelled last November. Waddell was also a known activist fighting for the rights of individuals with African descent, he was a candidate to be a member of Congress, and as a journalist, and criticized the policies of President Bharrat Jagdeo, who rejected any alleged link of the murder with his party.
The reporter had also had denounced the existence in his country of death squads. Police confirmed that they are looking into this aspect of the investigation but the motive of the crime is still unknown.
Marroquín, editor of the Guatemalan newspaper Prensa Libre, expressed that the murderers of this journalist should be investigated quickly and severely punished, according to Principle 5 of the Declaration of Chapultepec, which President Jagdeo signed on May 24, 2002.
