IAPA worries about health of Cuban journalist on hunger strike
Requests investigation into attacks against reporters in The Bahamas
Miami (February 10, 2006).- The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) reports the serious health condition of journalist Guillermo Fariñas Hernández, who has been on a hunger strike in Cuba for the past 11 days; and condemns attacks against four journalists from Miami that were reporting on Cuban detainees in The Bahamas.
Fariñas started the hunger strike on January 31, and demands that Cuban authorities guarantee Internet access and the right to information. According to the journalists relatives, his health has been deteriorating and he was hospitalized yesterday. Fariñas is the director of the independent news agency, Cubanacán Press, in Santa Clara, Villaclara province in the islands central region.
At the start of Fariñas hunger strike he sent a letter to President Fidel Castro in which he explained that because the great majority of Cubans do not have access to a free flow of information, which includes Internet access .I have decided to declare a hunger strike, including water, until I die
Gonzalo Marroquín, chairman of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, stated that we regret that in the age of electronic media that one needs to resort to a hunger strike to bring attention to the lack of and restrictions to freedom of expression, of the press, and to the right of citizens to seek and receive information. We hold the Cuban authorities responsible for the journalists fate.
Marroquín, editor of the Guatemalan daily, Prensa Libre, also condemned and publicly requested an investigation into the attack against four journalists from Miami by guards at Carmichael Road refuge camp in The Bahamas on February 7. The reporter Mario Vallejo and cameraman Osvaldo Duarte, from Univisión; as well as journalist Alberto Tavares and cameraman Lázaro Abreu, from Telemundo, traveled to Nassau to investigate and interview Cuban families and detainees in this center for illegal immigrants because of allegations of mistreatment. Vallejo was injured on the forehead and some of his camera recording equipment was confiscated.

Preocupa a la SIP salud de periodista cubano en huelga de hambre
Solicita investigación por agresiones contra reporteros en las Bahamas
Miami (10 de febrero del 2006).- La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) llamó la atención sobre el grave estado de salud del periodista Guillermo Fariñas Hernández, en huelga de hambre desde hace 11 días en Cuba; y condenó las agresiones contra cuatro periodistas de Miami que cubrían información sobre detenidos cubanos en las Bahamas.
Fariñas inició su huelga de hambre desde el 31 de enero en demanda de que las autoridades cubanas garanticen el acceso a Internet y el derecho a la libertad de información. De acuerdo a familiares del periodista su salud se ha deteriorado y debió ser hospitalizado ayer. El periodista es director de la agencia independiente de noticias Cubanacán Press, en Santa Clara, provincia de Villaclara en la región central de la isla.
Al iniciar su huelga de hambre Fariñas envío una carta al presidente Fidel Castro en la que explicó que debido a que la inmensa mayoría de los cubanos no tenemos acceso a un libre flujo de información, lo que incluye el acceso a la red informática Internet . he decidido declararme en huelga de hambre y de sed hasta morir
Gonzalo Marroquín, presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información, aseveró que lamentamos que en la era de la comunicaciones cibernéticas se deba recurrir al recurso de la huelga de hambre para subrayar la carencia y restricciones a la libertad de expresión, de prensa y al derecho de los ciudadanos a buscar y recibir información. Responsabilizamos a las autoridades de Cuba por la suerte del periodista.
Marroquín, director del diario guatemalteco Prensa Libre, también condenó y solicitó públicamente una investigación sobre la agresión contra cuatro periodistas de Miami a manos de guardias del campamento de refugiados Carmichael Road, en las Bahamas el 7 de febrero. El reportero Mario Vallejo y el camarógrafo Osvaldo Duarte, de Univisión; así como el periodista Alberto Tavares y el camarógrafo Lázaro Abreu, de Telemundo, viajaron a Nassau para investigar y entrevistar a familiares y detenidos cubanos en ese centro para emigrantes ilegales por denuncias de maltrato. Vallejo fue herido en la frente y parte de su equipo de filmación fue incautado.
