Beneplácito de la SIP por sentencias contra acusados en asesinato de periodista peruano
Miami (10 de febrero del 2006).- La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) se sumó al beneplácito del Consejo de la Prensa Peruana (CPP) por la sentencia condenatoria contra cinco acusados en el asesinato del periodista Alberto Rivera Fernández, ocurrido en Perú el 21 de abril de 2004.
Representantes de la SIP y el CPP que han dado seguimiento al proceso judicial, asistieron a la lectura del veredicto el pasado 7 de febrero en un tribunal de la provincia de Coronel Portillo que condenó a Edwin Pérez Pinedo y Angel Mendoza Casanova, a 30 años; Roy Culqui Taurino y Martín Flores Vázquez, a 25 años y a Tercero Samuel Gonzales Pinedo, a 10 años en prisión.
El presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información, Gonzalo Marroquín, expresó que nos satisface el fallo dado a conocer por la justicia peruana y confiamos en el total esclarecimiento de este asesinato y otros crímenes impunes.
La primera semana de marzo también serán procesados Luis Valdez Villacorta, alcalde de Coronel Portillo; Solio Ramírez Garay, ex presidente de la Sala Civil de la Corte Superior de Ucayali; Jorge Barrantes Aguilar, funcionario de la alcaldía y Lito Pizango Fasabi, como presuntos implicados en el asesinato del periodista.
La SIP y el CPP realizaron en septiembre pasado una misión conjunta en Perú en la que se reunieron con autoridades en Lima y en Pucallpa (a 860 kilómetros al noreste de la capital) y exigieron el esclarecimiento de autoría material e intelectual del crimen de Rivera Fernández, conductor del programa "Transparencia", en la radio Frecuencia Oriental.
Marroquín, director del diario guatemalteco Prensa Libre, aseveró que la Declaración de Pucallpa, firmada el 20 de septiembre del 2005 por la SIP, CPP y el Instituto Prensa y Sociedad, es una importante herramienta que permitirá unir fuerzas y la coordinación de acciones conjuntas para combatir la impunidad y las agresiones contra los periodistas en Perú.

IAPA pleased with sentences against murderers of Peruvian journalist
Miami (February 10, 2006).- The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) joins the Peruvian Press Council (CPP, for its Spanish acronym) in welcoming the sentences imposed against five individuals found guilty in the murder of journalist Alberto Rivera Fernández, killed in Peru on April 21, 2004.
IAPA and CPP representatives that followed the trial attended the reading of the verdict on February 7 at the courthouse in Coronel Portillo province that sentenced Edwin Pérez Pinedo and Angel Mendoza Casanova to 30 years; Roy Culqui Taurino and Martín Flores Vázquez to 25 years, and Tercero Samuel Gonzales Pinedo to ten years in prison.
The chairman of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Gonzalo Marroquín, expressed that we are satisfied with this ruling made by the Peruvian court, and are confident that this murder will be completely solved, as well as other unpunished crimes.
Other suspects involved in the journalists murder will go to trial during the first week in March, against, Luis Valdez Villacorta, mayor of Coronel Portillo; Solio Ramírez Garay, former president of the Civil Division of the Superior Court of Ucayali; Jorge Barrantes Aguilar, employee of the Mayors office, and Lito Pizango Fasabi.
Last September, the IAPA and CPP organized a joint mission in Peru during which they met with officials in Lima and in Pucallpa (860 kilometers northeast of the capital) when they demanded that the masterminds and perpetrators of the murder of Rivera Fernández, host of the program "Transparencia" on Frecuencia Oriental radio, be found.
Marroquín, director of the Guatemalan newspaper Prensa Libre, warned that the Declaration of Pucallpa, signed on September 20, 2005, by the IAPA, CPP, and Press and Society Institute (IPYS), is an important tool that will allow us to unite forces and prepare joint action plans to fight impunity and attacks against journalists in Peru.
