Enérgica condena a matanza en diario de Guyana/Roundly condemned attack on newspaper in Guyana

En una carta enviada hoy al presidente de Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, se solicitó una investigación profunda para identificar y castigar a los responsables, así como brindar las garantías necesarias para periodistas, trabajadores y medios de comunicación en general, durante este especial periodo político en que se celebrarán elecciones nacionales el próximo 28 de agosto.

En el atentado ocurrido el 8 de agosto por la noche, un grupo de desconocidos enmascarados ingresó en las instalaciones del periódico con armas largas asesinando a mansalva a cuatro trabajadores de la sala de impresión e hiriendo a otro de gravedad. Pese a que se desconocen los móviles del incidente, no se descarta que puedan formar parte del contexto de violencia que se ha generado en el país en las últimas semanas.

El presidente Jagdeo, en visita al diario afectado, expresó que si bien no se conocen todavía los motivos el atentado “es un acto deliberado para matar a estos hombres del Kaieteur News”. Los asesinados son Mark Maikoo, Chitram Persaud, Eon Wigman y Richard Stuart, mientras que Shazim Mohamed permanece hospitalizado en estado crítico.

La misiva, firmada por el presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información de la SIP, Gonzalo Marroquín, enfatizó que “si este incidente permanece impune, permitirá el crecimiento de un clima de incertidumbre y autocensura que conspira contra la libertad de prensa y la democracia en su país”.

Marroquín, director del diario guatemalteco Prensa Libre agregó que “estamos confiados que Ud, como firmante de la Declaración de Chapultepec en cuyo artículo 4 especifica que los actos violentos ‘deben ser investigados con prontitud y sancionados con severidad’, sabrá responder y brindar las garantías necesarias que necesitan todos los periodistas, trabajadores y medios de comunicación para desempeñar su trabajo libremente en esta etapa crucial para el pueblo guyanés”.

MIAMI, Florida (August 9, 2006)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today roundly condemned an attack on the Kaieteur News newspaper in Guyana Tuesday in which four pressroom workers were killed.

In a letter to Guyana President Bharrat Jagdeo the organization called for an immediate investigation to identify those responsible for the incident and bring them swiftly to justice. It urged action to ensure the safety of journalists, press workers and news media in general at this critical time, in the run-up to general elections on August 28.

In the attack on the evening of August 8 a group of unidentified masked men armed with automatic weapons burst into the newspaper plant and opened fire, killing four workers in the pressroom and seriously wounding another. The motive for the raid was unknown, but it was not ruled out that it was part of a wave of violence that has been rocking the South American nation in recent weeks.

During a visit to the newspaper plant President Jagdeo said although the motive for the attack remained unknown it clearly was “a deliberate act to kill these men of the Kaieteur News.”

Those killed were identified as Mark Maikoo, Chitram Persaud, Eon Wigman and Richard Stuart. The injured man, Shazim Mohamed, is hospitalized in critical condition.

The letter to the president, signed by Gonzalo Marroquín, chairman of the IAPA’s Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, declared, “If this incident goes unpunished, that will produce a climate of uncertainty and self-censorship that is contrary to freedom of the press and democracy in your country.”

Marroquín, editor of the Guatemala City, Guatemala, newspaper Prensa Libre, added, “We are certain that you, as a signatory of the Declaration of Chapultepec, whose Article 4 states that  violent  “acts must be investigated promptly and punished harshly,” will respond with appropriate action to provide the necessary guarantees for journalists, press workers and the media in general to work freely at this critical time in your country.”
