La SIP condena asesinato contra periodista en Haití
Miami (21 de mayo de 2007).- La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) condenó el asesinato del periodista Alix Joseph en Haití y llamó a las autoridades a investigar con prontitud y llevar a los culpables ante la justicia.
Joseph, director y popular locutor de Radio Provinciale en Gonaives, 110 kilómetros al norte de Puerto Príncipe, fue asesinado el miércoles 16 de mayo. El periodista, de 38 años, estaba sentado en un vehículo junto a su novia cuando dos sujetos le dispararon en 11 ocasiones. Su novió salió ilesa del ataque.
Instamos a las autoridades a investigar de manera exhautiva y con celeridad el asesinato, a fin de que este caso no se sume a otros crímenes impunes contra periodistas en Haití, expresó, Gonzalo Marroquín, presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información de la SIP y director del diario guatemalteco Prensa Libre.
Se desconoce el móvil del crimen y si Joseph había recibido amenazas de muerte, sin embargo, según declaraciones del periodista Frantz Justin Altidor de la emisora, en la Radio Provinciale se recibieron llamadas amenazantes contra la posición del medio a favor del desarme de las pandillas locales, cuyas manifestaciones de violencia son frecuentes contra periodistas y la población en general.
El 19 de enero de 2007 también fue asesinado el fotógrafo independiente Jean-Rémy Badio, en su domicilio en Martissant, suburbio de Puerto Príncipe. El crimen fue atribuido a miembros de una pandilla local.

MIAMI, Florida (May 21, 2007)The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today expressed outrage at the murder of journalist Alix Joseph in Haiti and called on the authorities there to conduct an in-depth investigation so as to bring the guilty to justice.
Joseph, director and a popular program host at Radio Provinciale radio station in Gonaives, 70 miles north of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, was killed on Wednesday, May 16. Joseph, 38, was sitting in a car alongside his girlfriend when two assailants shot him 11 times. His girlfriend was unharmed in the attack.
We urge the authorities to carry out an exhaustive and prompt investigation into this murder, so that this case does not become yet another murder of a journalist in Haiti that goes unpunished, declared Gonzalo Marroquín, chairman of the IAPAs Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information.
Although the motive for the killing was not immediately known or whether Joseph had received death threats, according to journalist colleague Frantz Justin Altidor the radio station they both worked for had received threatening telephone calls protesting the radios calls for disarming local gangs, which have frequently resorted to violence against journalists and the general public.
On January 19, 2007, freelance photographer Jean-Rémy Badio was killed at his home in Martissant, a Port-au-Prince suburb. The crime was attributed to members of a local street gang.
