Gran expectativa despierta Conferencia Hemisférica de la
Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa contra la impunidad
Miami (6 de julio de 2007).- Más de 150 personas entre magistrados de Cortes Supremas de Justicia, jueces, abogados, directivos de medios de comunicación, periodistas y representantes de organizaciones no gubernamentales, se darán cita del 18 al 20 de julio en la segunda conferencia hemisférica realizada por la SIP sobre impunidad y crímenes contra periodistas.
Conferencia Hemisférica: Poder Judicial, Prensa, Impunidad se denominan las jornadas de trabajo a la que han confirmado su presencia 20 magistrados, entre presidentes y ministros de Cortes Supremas de Justicia del continente americano.
Jueces, periodistas y especialistas jurídicos debatirán y aportarán recomendaciones sobre la impunidad, la violencia contra periodistas, la autocensura y la obstrucción de la justicia, como factores que debilitan la libertad de prensa, el derecho del público a la información y la democracia. Se espera que al final de la Conferencia surja una declaración de principios.
Es nuestro principal objetivo crear un espacio de entendimiento y diálogo, en que el poder judicial y la prensa puedan exponer sus diferencias y desafíos, pero que al mismo tiempo puedan identificar herramientas eficientes para combatir la impunidad, como único antídoto para que disminuya la violencia y la autocensura, y se fortalezca la libertad de prensa y de expresión, dijo Rafael Molina, presidente de la SIP, director del periódico El Día, de República Dominicana.
El presidente de la República Dominicana, Leonel Fernández, será el anfitrión de una cena en el Palacio Nacional la noche previa al inicio de la actividad. El presidente de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, Sergio García Ramírez, brindará una conferencia magistral, así como el periodista y vicepresidente de Colombia, Francisco Santos.
La SIP contabiliza que en los últimos 20 años, 320 periodistas han sido asesinados en las Américas por razón de su oficio. En ese mismo período, también cientos de jueces, fiscales y auxiliares de la Justicia fueron victimados en represalia por su labor profesional.
Este evento, que cuenta con la colaboración de la Suprema Corte de Justicia de República Dominicana, marca el décimo aniversario de la Conferencia Hemisférica Crímenes Sin Castigo Contra Periodistas que la SIP realizó en 1997 en Guatemala. Ambas, así como todo el proyecto de Impunidad de la SIP, cuentan con el apoyo económico de la Fundación John S. y James L. Knight.
Inter American Press Association to hold much-anticipated hemispheric conference on impunity
Miami (July 6, 2007) More than 150 people, including Supreme Court justices, federal judges, lawyers, media executives, journalists, and representatives of nongovernmental organizations, will gather July 1820 for the IAPAs second hemispheric conference on impunity and crimes against journalists.
Twenty Supreme Court justices from throughout the Americas including several chief justices have already confirmed their plans to attend the event, which is being held under the banner Hemispheric Conference: The Judiciary, the Press, and Impunity.
Participants will discuss and issue recommendations on impunity, violence against journalists, self-censorship, and obstruction of justice as factors that undermine freedom of the press, freedom of information, and democracy. A declaration of principles is expected as the outcome at the end of the conference.
Our main objective is to open up a space for understanding and dialogue, where the judiciary and the press can not only hash out their differences and discuss the challenges they face, but where they can also identify effective tools in the fight against impunity, as the only antidote to violence and self-censorship and the way to bolster press freedom and freedom of speech, said IAPA President Rafael Molina, editor of El Día newspaper in the Dominican Republic.
Dominican President Leonel Fernández will host a dinner at the National Palace the evening prior to the start of the conference. Sergio García Ramírez, the president of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, will deliver a keynote address, as will journalist and Colombian Vice President Francisco Santos.
By the IAPAs count, 320 journalists in the Americas have been killed in the last 20 years for reasons related to their work. During this period, hundreds of judges, prosecutors, and other judicial personnel have also been victimized in retaliation for their work.
This gathering, which features the collaboration of the Supreme Court of the Dominican Republic, marks the tenth anniversary of the Hemisphere Conference on Unpunished Crimes Against Journalists, held by the IAPA in Guatemala in 1997. Funding for both of these hemispheric conferences, as well as for the entire IAPA Impunity Project, has been provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
