ASESINATO DE PERIODISTA EN EE.UU.
Miami (3 agosto 2007).- La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) condenó hoy el asesinato del periodista Chauncey Bailey, ocurrido en Oakland, Estados Unidos, y llamó a las autoridades a investigar con prontitud y llevar a los culpables ante la justicia.
Según reportes periodísticos, Bailey, de 57 años, editor desde junio pasado del semanario americano-africano Oakland Post, fue asaltado cuando se dirigia a su trabajo, alrededor de las 7.30 de la mañana de ayer, recibiendo varios disparos que le provocaron la muerte. El pistolero huyó a pie y aún se desconoce su identidad y el móvil del crimen.
Instamos a las autoridades a investigar a fondo y con prontitud este asesinato y que el caso no se sume a la lista de crímenes impunes del continente, dijo Gonzalo Marroquín, presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información de la SIP y director del diario guatemalteco Prensa Libre.
Durante 2007, ocho periodistas han sido asesinados en las Américas (dos en Haití, cinco en México y uno en Estados Unidos). Otros dos están desaparecidos en México.

MIAMI, Florida (August 3, 2007)The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today condemned the murder of journalist Chauncey Bailey in Oakland, California and called on the authorities to investigate the crime promptly so as to bring the guilty to justice.
According to news reports Bailey, 57, editor of the African-American newspaper Oakland Post since June this year, was shot to death as he was on his way to work around 7:30 a.m. yesterday (Thursday). The gunman fled on foot. His identity and the motive for the attack were not immediately known.
We urge the authorities to investigate this murder in depth and promptly so that the case does not become just another on the list of unpunished crimes in the Americas, said Gonzalo Marroquín, chairman of the IAPAs Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information and editor of the Guatemala City, Guatemala, newspaper Prensa Libre.
Bailey was the eighth journalist to be murdered in the Western Hemisphere so far this year the others being two in Haiti and five in Mexico. Another two newsmen have disappeared in Mexico.
