The conference, with more than 200 jurists and journalists already registered, will be held in Washington, D.C. June 20-22. It will examine legal problems facing the press and its relation with the courts, with the aim of strengthening free speech and press freedom in the Western Hemisphere.
Among the Latin American supreme court chief justices to speak at the event organized by the IAPA with the sponsorship of the Chicago-based Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation are Genaro David Góngora Pimentel of Mexico, Eduardo Moliné OConnor of Argentina, Gerardo Monroy Cabra of Colombia and Armando Bermeo Castillo Castillo of Ecuador. It will be the first-ever meeting of supreme court justices from 22 countries in the Americas.
One of the innovations at the conference will be a mock trial in which judges and journalists will re-enact problems that reporters face in covering trials and other legal proceedings in Latin America as a result of the legal systems of the countries there.
During the second day of the conference the IAPAs Chapultepec Grand Prize will be presented to Claudio Grossman, dean of the American University School of Law, in recognition of his defense of the principles of the Declaration of Chapultepec, an IAPA-sponsored document drafted in 1994 that sets out the guarantees required for a climate of freedom of the press to prevail.
