MIAMI, Florida (September 13, 2002)— A delegation of the Inter American
Press Association (IAPA) and International Press Institute (IPI) made up of
news media executives from Africa, Europe and North and South America will visit
Venezuela September 23-25 to look into the state of press freedom there.
The Miami-based IAPA and Vienna-based IPI are both organizations dedicated
to the defense and promotion of freedom of the press and free speech.
The delegation’s busy schedule includes meetings with local journalists
and representatives of labor unions, industry, the Roman Catholic Church, political
parties, members of the judiciary and legislature, and other sectors of Venezuelan
civil society. The group has also requested a meeting with Venezuelan President
Hugo Chávez.
The delegation will be headed by IAPA President Robert J. Cox, The Post and
Courier, Charleston, South Carolina, and IPI President Jorge E. Fascetto, Diario
Popular, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
It will also include, representing the IAPA, Andrés García Gamboa,
Novedades de Quintana Roo, Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico; Rafael Molina,
Ahora, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Jorge Enríquez, Novedades de
Quintana Roo, Cancún, Mexico; Julio E. Muñoz, IAPA executive director,
and Ricardo Trotti, press freedom coordinator.
Delegation members from the IPI will include David Greenway, The Boston Globe,
Boston, Massachusetts; Wilfred Kiboro, group chief executive, Nation Media Group,
Kenya; Mitja Mersol, Delo, Slovenia; Norman Webster, The Montreal Gazette, Canada;
Johann P. Fritz, IPI director, and Michael Kudlak, press freedom advisor.
