The traditional IAPA springtime meeting, during which the status of Freedom of the Press in the Americas is reviewed, is being held under the leadership of its president, Jack Fuller, Tribune Publishing, Chicago, Illinois.
The Host Committee of the meeting, which is being held at the Fiesta Americana Grand Hotel in Los Cabos, is led by José Santiago Healy, El Imparcial, Hermosillo, Mexico, and made up of representatives from other IAPA members in that country.
The Host Committee reported that “they have worked hard so that this is one of the most intense Midyear Meetings in the Association’s history. The natural beauty of the Pacific Coast of Mexico and the legendary hospitality of this nation undoubtedly will motivate everyone to push forward in the mission to safeguard freedom of expression in the hemisphere.”
President Fox will speak during the opening ceremony on Sunday, March 14, at noon. His wife, Martha Sahagún de Fox, will be the keynote speaker during lunch. She will be introduced by IAPA Second Vice President, Diana Daniels, The Washington Post Company.
Afterwards, there will be a panel entitled “The Training and Quality of Journalists”, along with Jack Fuller and Jaime Abello, Executive Director of the New Ibero-American Journalism Foundation created by García Márquez. The introduction will be made by Luis Gabriel Cano, El Espectador, Bogotá, Colombia. García Márquez will be a special guest.
Female delegates and spouses will meet on Saturday morning during a special session coordinated by Nélida Rajneri, Diario Río Negro, General Roca-Río Negro, Argentina.
On Monday, another panel will discuss the issue of “Transparency and Access to Information in Mexico”, moderated by IAPA First Vice President, Alejandro Miró Quesada C., El Comercio, Lima Peru.
Professors from the Institute of Technology and Advanced Studies of Monterrey (ITESM) in Monterrey, Mexico will make a variety of presentations during the seminar series on professional training that will take place during the meeting.
The country-by-country reports will be heard on Saturday, March 13, during the session of the IAPA’s Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, chaired by Rafael Molina, El Nacional, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Prior to the official inauguration on Sunday, there will be a special panel that will highlight the “Ten Years of the Declaration of Chapultepec”, which contains ten principles on Freedom of Expression that were adopted by the IAPA in 1994 at Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City.
This panel will include the participation of the main promoters of this project, such as former IAPA presidents, Edward Seaton, Seaton Newspapers, Manhattan, Kansas; James McClatchy, McClatchy Newspapers, Sacramento, California; and Danilo Arbilla, Búsqueda, Montevideo, Uruguay, as well as former president of the Inter-American Committee on Human Rights (IACHR), Claudio Grossman, and current chairman of the IAPA’s Chapultepec Committee, Sergio Muñoz, Los Angeles Times, California.
Then, on Sunday morning, there will be a panel on the “Challenges of Journalism in the Hemisphere” with the participation of well-known reporter Jorge Ramos from the U.S. television network, Univisión.
The IAPA’s main officers will hold meetings throughout the conference, through various working committees they belong to, such as the Executive Committee and Advisory Council, Finance Committee, Scholarship Fund, Newspaper-in-Education Committee, Committee on the World Summit on the Information Society, Awards Committee, Inter-American Committee, Press Institute Advisory Board, and Impunity Committee.
IAPA officers and members will meet again in October this year at the 60th
General Assembly to be held in Antigua, Guatemala.
