Miami (October 8, 2013).—The government objective of national security at the expense of freedom of the press in the United States will be one of the leading issues that the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) will be discussing at its General Assembly to be held beginning next week in Denver, Colorado.

Gary P. Pruitt, president and CEO of the Associated Press (AP), will address the matter on October 19 from the perspective of a news agency, one of the most prestigious in the world, which has had to fight against the intrusion of the U.S. Department of Justice into the telephone records of its journalists and sources.

The IAPA will also take up the issue from the standpoint of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. Its executive director, Bruce Brown, will speak on October 20 after The Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald, who will discuss his vicissitudes in revealing Edward Snowden’s leaks concerning the spying and vigilance program carried out by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).

The press freedom report on the United States in which details of these issues are expected, will be presented along with special reports from countries with serious freedom of expression problems, among them Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela.

The IAPA General Assembly will take place October 18-22. More than 300 reporters, editors and publishers of media will also take part in technical seminars that deal with topics ranging from video channels in newspaper portals, online advertising to content for mobile devices.
