La SIP pide investigación por actos violentos contra diario en Costa Rica
Miami (31 de marzo del 2005).- La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) solicitó a las autoridades de Costa Rica que investiguen dos incidentes violentos registrados durante el mes de marzo contra las instalaciones de La Nación, al tiempo que expresó su solidaridad con el equipo de trabajadores del diario.
El pasado 23 de marzo sujetos no identificados dispararon en varias ocasiones contra la estructura de La Nación sin que se registraran heridos ni daños importantes. Un incidente similar ocurrió el 8 de marzo cuando un hombre disparó varias veces contra el puesto de seguridad que albergaba a dos guardias del diario, quienes lograron salir ilesos de la agresión.
En una carta enviada al director de La Nación, Alejandro Urbina, el presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información de la SIP, Gonzalo Marroquín, expresó que confiamos en que las autoridades costarricenses, siguiendo su tradición democrática y de justicia, investigarán de inmediato ambos incidentes.
Marroquín, director del diario Prensa Libre, de Guatemala, expresó su respaldo al equipo de trabajadores del diario y adelantó que la SIP se mantendrá atenta, ante quienes podrían estar intentando silenciar a la prensa por la vía de la violencia y el miedo.
Afortunadamente dijo- no hubo heridos, pero sabemos que estas acciones dejan huella, por lo que públicamente reiteramos que a fin de despejar dudas sobre la vigencia de la tolerancia hacia la libertad de prensa en el país, estos actos de violencia sean esclarecidos con prontitud.
IAPA requests investigation into violent acts against newspaper in Costa Rica
Miami (March 31, 2005).- The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) asked Costa Rican officials to investigate two violent incidents reported during the month of March at the headquarters of La Nación newspaper and expressed its solidarity with newspaper staff.
Last March 23, unidentified individuals fired shots several times at the building of La Nación newspaper without injuries or significant damage being reported. A similar incident occurred on March 8 when a man fired several shots against the guard station where two newspaper guards were present. Neither was injured in the attack.
In a letter sent to the editor of La Nación, Alejandro Urbina, the chairman of the IAPA Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Gonzalo Marroquín, expressed that we trust that Costa Rican officials, following their tradition in democracy and justice, will immediately investigate both incidents.
Marroquín, editor of Prensa Libre in Guatemala, expressed his support of newspaper staff and stated the IAPA will remain alert over those who may be trying to silence the press through violence or fear.
Fortunately, he said, there were no injuries, but we know that these acts leave marks, so we publicly reiterate that to clear any doubt that there is tolerance towards press freedom in the country, these violent acts must be solved promptly.
