SIP rechazó atentado contra diario y exilio forzado de periodista en Colombia
Miami (18 de agosto del 2005).- La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) rechazó el atentado contra las instalaciones del periódico El Informador, de Santa Marta, en el departamento colombiano del Magdalena, ocurrido el pasado 15 de agosto, cuando desconocidos a bordo de una moto lanzaron una granada contra el inmueble.
Aunque no se reportaron heridos, el estallido ocurrió poco después de las ocho de la noche en momentos en que tres reporteros y un diagramador terminaban la edición del periódico. El artefacto explosivo quebró vidrios, puertas y ventanas. De acuerdo a información de prensa, se desconoce el móvil del ataque.
Condenamos esta agresión contra un medio colombiano. Exhortamos a las autoridades a investigar el atentado hasta dar con los culpables. Este hecho ocurre cuando observamos un incremento en las amenazas contra periodistas y mientras un colega se ve obligado a abandonar el país para proteger su vida y la de su familia, expresó Gonzalo Marroquín, presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información.
Marroquín, director del diario Prensa Libre, de Guatemala, se refirió a la situación que provocó la salida de Colombia del director de Noticias UNO, Daniel Coronell, su esposa, la presentadora de noticias, María Cristina Uribe y su hija.
"La justicia colombiana debe investigar y castigar a quienes están detrás de estas acciones contra la vida del periodista y su familia, quien venía recibiendo amenazas desde abril pasado, agregó Marroquín.
De acuerdo a información de la Unidad de Respuesta Rápida de la SIP en Colombia, en lo que va del año dos periodistas salieron del país, cuatro abandonaron sus lugares de origen y fueron reubicados en otras ciudades de Colombia, mientras que ocho periodistas recibieron amenazas. También se produjeron tres atentados contra la infraestructura de medios de comunicación.
IAPA condemns attack on newspaper, forced exile of journalist in Colombia
MIAMI, Florida (August 18, 2005)The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today expressed its repudiation of an August 15th attack on the plant of the newspaper El Informador in Santa Marta, in the Colombian province of Magdalena, in which unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle hurled a grenade at the building.
There were no injuries reported in the incident which occurred at 8:00 p.m. as three reporters and a layout artist were putting finishing touches to the newspapers edition. Windows and doors were smashed by the blast. The motive for the attack was not immediately known.
We condemn this aggression against a Colombian news outlet, declared Gonzalo Marroquín, chairman of the IAPAs Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information. We call on the authorities to investigate the incident and identify those responsible. This attack happened when threats against journalists are on the increase and right on the heels of a journalist being forced to leave the country in order to protect his life and that of his family.
Marroquín, editor of the Guatemala City, Guatemala, daily newspaper Prensa Libre, was referring to a series of threats that led to the departure from Colombia of the director of the radio news program Noticias UNO, Daniel Coronell, his wife, news anchor María Cristina Uribe, and their daughter.
The Colombian judiciary must investigate and bring to justice those who are behind the threats against the lives of the journalist and his family, which they have been receiving since April this year, Marroquín said.
According to information compiled by the IAPAs Rapid Response Unit in Colombia, so far this year two journalists have fled the country, four have been relocated from their hometowns to other cities in Colombia and eight have received threats. There have been three attacks on news media property.
