SIP repudia agresiones contra periodistas en Perú
Miami (25 de agosto del 2005) La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) repudió las agresiones perpetradas por un hermano del presidente de Perú, Alejandro Toledo, contra dos periodistas de televisión mientras investigaban irregularidades administrativas.
De acuerdo a denuncias recibidas en la SIP de medios, periodistas y organizaciones de prensa peruanas, Luis Toledo Manrique, hermano del presidente Toledo, agredió violentamente al periodista Gino Márquez Alvarez y al camarógrafo Germán Huaroto Parra del programa Cuarto Poder de América Televisión, quienes investigaban el uso indebido de vehículos oficiales.
Gonzalo Marroquín, presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información de la SIP, expresó que confiamos en que las autoridades peruanas evaluarán la conducta del agresor y tomarán las medidas necesarias para proteger la integridad física de los periodistas.
Marroquín, director del diario guatemalteco Prensa Libre, agregó que lo que está en juego aquí, muy especialmente, es la garantía que el Estado debe brindar a sus ciudadanos a recibir información.
En las agresiones, perpetradas el 19 de agosto pasado, también participaron un hijo y varios miembros de la seguridad de Luis Toledo. A raíz de la agresión, Huaroto debió ser internado en un centro de salud de Lima.
IAPA protests attacks on journalists in Peru
MIAMI, Florida (August 25, 2005)The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today expressed outrage at attacks carried out by a brother of Perus President Alejandro Toledo on two television reporters while they were investigating alleged wrongdoing by government officials.
According to complaints received by the IAPA from local news media, journalists and press organizations, the presidents brother, Luis Toledo Manrique, punched reporter Gino Márquez Alvarez and cameraman Germán Huaroto Parra from the América Televisión news program Cuatro Poder, who at the time were investigating allegations of unlawful use of official vehicles.
Gonzalo Marroquín, chairman of the IAPAs Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, declared that we trust that the Peruvian authorities will look into the incident and take the necessary steps to safeguard the well-being of journalists.
Marroquín, editor of the Guatemala City, Guatemala, newspaper Prensa Libre, added, What is especially at issue here is the guarantee that the government should give to citizens to receive information.
Also taking part in the assault, which occurred on August 19, were Luis Toledos son and several of his security guards. Huarotos injuries were such that he had to be hospitalized.
