Urge la SIP investigación inmediata por asesinato de periodista en Guatemala
También solicita que indaguen amenazas de muerte contra corresponsal de Prensa Libre
Miami (11 de septiembre de 2006).- La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) condenó el asesinato del periodista Eduardo Heriberto Mass Bol, ocurrido en Guatemala el 10 de septiembre y pidió a las autoridades indagar con profundidad y urgencia a fin de dar con los responsables y conocer los móviles.
El periodista Mass Bol, corresponsal de Radio Punto, fue atacado con cinco impactos de bala que le ocasionaron la muerte ayer en Cobán, cabecera departamental del departamento de Alta Verapaz, 208 Km. al norte de la capital. De acuerdo a testigos que han presentado varias versiones sobre el asesinato, Mass Bol, de 58 años, habría perdido el control del vehículo en el que viajaba y luego se escucharon disparos.
Demandamos a las autoridades una pronta y profunda investigación a fin de deslindar responsabilidades y conocer las razones del asesinato, expresó Gonzalo Marroquín, presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información y director del diario Prensa Libre, al tiempo que repudió el crimen.
Además de sus actividades como periodista en Radio Punto donde cubría temas diversos, Maas Bol era vocal I de la Asociación de Periodistas y Comunicadores Sociales de Alta Verapaz; se desempeñaba como supervisor en el Ministerio de Educación, docente del programa de profesionalización de la Asociación de Maestros de ecuación Rural y promotor de derechos humanos. Según sus familiares nunca había sido amenazado.
El asesinato de Mass Bol ocurrió la madrugada del domingo cuando regresaba del municipio vecino de Lanquín, donde había participado el sábado junto a supervisores de la Dirección Departamental de Educación en el cumpleaños de otro trabajador.
El titular de Libertad de Prensa e Información de la SIP, solicitó también a las autoridades investigar amenazas de muerte contra corresponsal del periódico Prensa Libre en Cobán, Ángel Martín Tax, quien recibió el 10 de septiembre una llamada telefónica en la que le advirtieron que sería el próximo en la lista.

Miami (September 11th, 2006).- The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) condemned the murder of journalist Eduardo Heriberto Mass Bol in Guatemala on September 10th and asked authorities to prosecute the perpetrators and determine their motives.
Radio Punto reporter Mass Bol was shot five times and killed yesterday in Cobán, Department of Alta Verapaz, 128 miles north of the capital. According to witnesses, whove given more than one version of the facts, Mass Bol, 58, lost control of his vehicle and latter on shots were heard.
We ask the authorities for a fast and thorough investigation to find the perpetrators and their motives, said Gonzalo Marroquín, Press Freedom & Information Committee president and editor of the Prensa Libre daily. Marroquín also repudiated the crime.
Besides a Radio Punto reporter covering a wide range of issues, Maas Bol was spokesperson for The Alta Verapaz Association of Reporters and Journalists; he was also a supervisor at the Ministry of Education, taught a professional development program at the Association of Teachers in Rural Areas and a defender of human rights. According to family members, he had not been threatened before.
Mass Bol was murdered early Sunday morning while coming back from the nearby city of Lanquín, where on Saturday he had attended the birthday celebration of a coworker together with Ministry of Education supervisors.
IAPAs Press Freedom & Information Committee president also asked authorities to investigate death threats against Ángel Martín Tax, a reporter with daily Prensa Libre in Cobán. Martín received on September 10th a phone call to let him know he was next on the list.
