La SIP anuncia conferencia hemisférica con jueces
para combatir la impunidad que afecta al periodismo
Miami (22 de marzo de 2007).- El presidente de la Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP), Rafael Molina, anunció la celebración de la Conferencia Hemisférica: Poder Judicial, Prensa, Impunidad, a la que fueron convocados jueces y periodistas con el objetivo de identificar herramientas eficientes para combatir la impunidad que rodea a numerosos casos de asesinatos de periodistas.
En las últimas décadas, la organización hemisférica viene reclamando terminar con la impunidad, un elemento que potencia la autocensura de medios de comunicación y periodistas, socavándose así la libertad de prensa y el derecho del público a la información. La SIP identificó que la mayoría de los más de 300 casos de periodistas asesinados desde 1987 a la fecha, permanece impune.
La Conferencia, de carácter gratuita, tendrá lugar en el Hotel Hilton Santo Domingo, República Dominicana, del 18 al 20 de julio próximo. Ya han confirmado su participación varios presidentes de Corte Suprema de Justicia de países americanos, así como jurisconsultos, líderes políticos, directores de medios y periodistas.
El presidente de República Dominicana, Leonel Fernández, inaugurará las sesiones, que tendrá como principal orador a Sergio García Ramírez, presidente de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos.
Entre diversos paneles y presentaciones interdisciplinarias, los participantes analizarán experiencias prácticas y exitosas para combatir los crímenes contra periodistas; revisarán legislación adecuada sobre no prescripción, tratados de extradición, agravamiento de penas; e identificarán resoluciones y fallos judiciales, así como la jurisprudencia en el sistema judicial interamericano.
Este encuentro también servirá para fomentar el mejor entendimiento entre jueces y periodistas, objetivo que la SIP inició en la Cumbre Hemisférica sobre Justicia y Libertad de Prensa en las Américas celebrada en Washington en el 2002.
La reunión coincide con el décimo aniversario de la conferencia mundial sobre impunidad que la SIP celebró en Guatemala en 1997. Ambos encuentros, así como el proyecto de Libertad de Prensa de la organización, es apoyado económicamente por la Fundación John S. y James L. Knight.

IAPA announces hemisphere conference with jurists to combat impunity
MIAMI, Florida (March 22, 2007)The president of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), Rafael Molina today announced the organization will hold a Hemisphere Conference on The Judiciary, The Press and Impunity to jurists and journalists to identify tools capable of combating the impunity of numerous cases of murdered journalists.
For several years the hemisphere free-press organization has advocated an end to the impunity that contributes to the news media and individual journalists self-imposed self-censorship, thus undermining freedom of the press and the publics right to know. The IAPA has found that the majority of the more than 300 cases of journalists murders since 1987 have gone unpunished.
This free conference will take place July 1820, 2007, at the Santo Domingo Hilton in the Dominican Republic. Several chief justices from throughout the Americas have already confirmed their plans to attend, as have legal specialists, political leaders, news media editor, and journalists.
Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernández will formally open the sessions, which will feature keynote speaker Sergio García Ramírez, president of the Inter-American Human Rights Court.
In panel discussions and inter-disciplinary presentations, participants will examine successful practical applications to combat crimes against journalists, review the legislation on statutes of limitations, extradition treaties and stiffening of penalties, and identify relevant resolutions and court rulings, as well as case law within the inter-American legal system.
The event will also provide grounds for a better understanding between jurists and journalists, an objective that the IAPA initiated at the Hemisphere Summit on Justice and Press Freedom in the Americas held in Washington, DC, in 2002.
This conference coincides with the 10th anniversary of the IAPA conference, held in Guatemala in 1997 and as the IAPAs Impunity Project, is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
