IAPA CALLS FOR ENTRIES IN 2008 EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM AWARDS CONTEST
MIAMI, Florida (November 15, 2007)The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today issued a call for entries for its 2008 Excellence in Journalism Awards. The annual contest attracts the best in journalism in the Americas. Publications and news agencies in more than 33 countries in North America, Latin America and the Caribbean submit their best works in English, Spanish or Portuguese in the contest, which has a January 15, 2008 deadline.
This year entries may again be submitted over the Internet. Last year we had a magnificent participation, with more than 500 entries. This year we hope to increase that figure, said Gustavo Mohme, editor of the Lima, Peru, newspaper La República and chairman of the IAPAs Awards Committee.
The adjudication panel will review the entries and choose the 10 finalists and winner in each of the 11 categories during the IAPAs Midyear Meeting scheduled to be held in Maracaibo, Venezuela, next March. The winners will receive diplomas and cash prizes during the organizations General Assembly in Madrid, Spain, next October. The awards are given in 11 categories international relations, human rights, news coverage, features, in-depth reporting, photography, cartoons, infographics, opinion, the newspaper in education and best online coverage. Also awarded is the IAPA Grand Prize for Press Freedom, to a person or organization with significant achievements on behalf of the cause of freedom of the press. In general the awards consist of $2,000, plaques and diplomas.
In 2008 we intend not only to increase the number of entrants but also improve the work of review and selection, said Cristina Aby-Azar, managing editor of The Wall Street Journal Americas, New York, and vice chairman of the IAPA Awards Committee.
The IAPA is an organization of more than 1,300 publications made up of publishers, editors and other professionals that has been dedicated for more than 60 years to defending and nurturing freedom of the press in the Western Hemisphere.
The invitation for entries and contest rules can be obtained form the IAPA Web site, www.sipiapa.com. It is not necessary to be an IAPA member in order to enter the contest.
