Delegación de la SIP reclamará en Venezuela garantías para
la libertad de prensa en el proceso de reforma constitucional
Caracas, Venezuela (18 de noviembre de 2007).- Una delegación internacional de la Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) está de visita en esta ciudad con el objetivo de dialogar con autoridades y diversos sectores sociales sobre aspectos referentes a la libertad de expresión, la libertad prensa y el ejercicio del periodismo, en el marco del proceso de reforma constitucional en Venezuela.
En cumplimiento a una resolución aprobada durante su asamblea general de octubre pasado en Miami, por décima ocasión durante el gobierno del presidente Hugo Chávez, directivos de la SIP están de visita este lunes y martes en Caracas, donde han solicitado entrevistas con las máximas autoridades de los poderes Ejecutivo, Legislativo y Judicial.
El grupo de la SIP, encabezado por su presidente Earl Maucker, director y primer vicepresidente del South Florida Sun-Sentinel, con sede en Fort Lauderdale, Florida, expresó que estamos una vez más en Venezuela con el fin primordial de mostrar nuestra solidaridad a los periodistas y a los medios de comunicación ante las dificultades que atraviesan en el ejercicio cotidiano por brindar información al público venezolano, y para pedir que en este proceso de reforma se brinden garantías absolutas para la plena vigencia de la libertad de prensa.
La delegación internacional se entrevistará además con periodistas, representantes de medios de comunicación, de organizaciones periodísticas y de la sociedad civil, entre otros, con el ánimo de tener una visión plural sobre el proceso popular de reforma constitucional en lo relativo a la libertad de expresión y de prensa.
Acompañan a Maucker, Gonzalo Marroquín, presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información, director de Prensa Libre de Guatemala; Enrique Santos, primer vicepresidente, codirector de El Tiempo, Colombia; Edward Seaton, ex presidente, director de The Manhattan Mercury, Estados Unidos; Alejandro Miró Quesada, ex presidente, director de El Comercio, Perú; Bruce Brugmann, miembro del Comité Ejecutivo, director de San Francisco Bay Guardian, Estados Unidos; Mark Fitzgerald, delegado, periodista Editor & Publisher, Estados Unidos; Julio E. Muñoz, director ejecutivo y Ricardo Trotti, director de Libertad de Prensa.
La SIP concluirá su misión con una conferencia de prensa el martes 20 de noviembre.

IAPA delegation to seek guarantees in Venezuela
for press freedom with constitutional reform
Caracas, Venezuela (November 18, 2007)An international delegation of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) is visiting this country with the objective of meeting with government officials and members of civil society on matters concerning freedom of expression, press freedom and the practice of journalism in the context of planned constitutional reform in this country.
Under terms of a resolution adopted at the IAPAs General Assembly in October this will be the 10th time during the administration of President Hugo Chávez that IAPA officers are visiting Caracas, where they have requested meetings with top officials of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government.
The IAPA group, headed by the organizations president, Earl Maucker, editor and senior vice president of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, based in Fort Lauderdale, announced, Once again we are here in Venezuela to demonstrate our solidarity with journalists and news media at a time when they are facing difficulties in carrying out their daily task of providing information to the Venezuelan people, and to request that in the constitutional reform process absolute guarantees be given that freedom of the press will exist in full.
The international delegation will also meet with individual journalists and representatives of news media, press organizations and civil society, among others, in order to obtain a comprehensive picture of the effects of proposed Constitutional reform on free speech and press freedom.
Accompanying Maucker are Gonzalo Marroquín, chairman of the IAPAs Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information and editor of Prensa Libre, Guatemala City, Guatemala; Enrique Santos, 1st vice president and co-editor of El Tiempo, Bogotá, Colombia; Edward Seaton, former president and editor of The Manhattan Mercury, Manhattan, Kansas; Alejandro Miró Quesada, former president and editor of El Comercio, Lima, Peru; Bruce Brugmann, member of the Executive Committee and editor of the San Francisco Bay Guardian, San Francisco, California; Mark Fitzgerald, a journalist with Editor & Publisher, New York; Executive Director Julio E. Muñoz, and Press Freedom Director Ricardo Trotti.
The IAPA will wind up its mission with a press conference on Tuesday, November 20.
