MIAMI, Florida (Dec.
7, 2000).-The Inter American Press Association invites journalists and print
media in the Western Hemisphere to submit entries for its 2001 IAPA Awards,
given in recognition of excellence in journalism in various categories.
Each year, the IAPA by awarding certificates, plaques and monetary grants
recognizes the best work submitted to it for its evaluation of excellence
in journalism in the areas of features, opinion, investigative reporting,
human rights, service to the community, inter-American relations, news coverage,
the newspaper in education, infographics, news photography and cartoons.
Entries of work in any of the three official IAPA languages - English, Spanish
and Portuguese - and published in 2000 should be sent to the IAPA offices
by February 1, 2001.
"These awards showcase
some of the finer pieces of journalism in the Americas," said IAPA
Awards Committee Chairman Saturnino Herrero Mitjans, of Clarín, Buenos
Aires, Argentina. "In the past, we have had journalists from more than
20 countries in the hemisphere participate. That makes it quite an international
event."
The awards groups and
categories are as follows: GROUP I IAPA Grand Prize for Press Freedom. For
outstanding work by one or more persons in the Americas in defense of freedom
of the press. (Nominations for the IAPA Grand Prize for Press Freedom may
be submitted up to the IAPAs Midyear Meeting March 16-20, 2001,in Fortaleza,
Brazil).
GROUP II -FOR WORK IN
ANY OF THE THREE OFFICIAL IAPA LANGUAGES: ENGLISH, SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE
and are as follows:
1.IAPA Pedro Joaquín
Chamorro Inter-American Relations Award. For news reports or series designed
to highlight, improve or resolve issues or problems in relations among the
countries of the Americas. Sponsored by La Prensa, Managua, Nicaragua.
2.IAPA Human Rights
and Service to the Community Award. For news reports or series designed
to highlight cases or situations that affect or lessen respect for human
rights in the Americas. Also for news reports or series that have produced
a proven effect of serving the community, including those on drugs and corruption.
Sponsored by Panamá-América, Panama; El Comercio, Lima, Peru;
Organización Publicitaria, S.A., San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and La
Nación, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
3.IAPA Newspaper in
Education Award. For NIE program with best content and educational value.
Sponsored by Diario Hoy, Quito, Ecuador, and Novedades de Quintana Roo,
Mexico.
4.IAPA Opinion Award.
For reasoned opinion pieces (not series) including, where possible, recommendations.
Sponsored by El Mercurio, Santiago, Chile.
5.IAPA News Coverage
Award. For any kind of news reporting. Sponsored by El Nacional, Caracas,
Venezuela, and O Estado de S. Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.
6.IAPA In-Depth Reporting
Award. For major investigative reporting or campaigns(which may have been
published as special sections) that have required extensive investigative
work. Sponsored by The Miami Herald, Miami, Florida, and The Globe and Mail,
Toronto, Canada.
7.IAPA Features Award.
For special reports (well-written, accurate articles with impact) produced
not under deadline pressure. Sponsored by El Comercio, Quito, Ecuador, and
McClatchy Newspapers, Sacramento, California.
8.IAPA Photography Award.
For one or more news photos. Sponsored by El País, Montevideo, Uruguay,
and ABC Color, Asunción, Paraguay.
9.IAPA Cartoon Award.
For cartoons with news and/or news and humor content. Sponsored by El Tiempo,
Bogotá, Colombia.
10.IAPA Infographics
Award. For the most creative infographics, reflecting the capabilities of
this specialty. Sponsored by Clarín, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The rules of the
competition are:
·Entries should be sent to the IAPA offices in Miami, Jules Dubois
Building 1801 S.W. 3rd Avenue, 8th Floor, Miami, FL 33129 and should identify
the relevant category and give details of the individual or company entrant
and of the nominating person or company;
·A note should be attached to each entry giving the reasons for the
nomination;
·Entries must be submitted also electronically on 3.5" diskette
in ASCII, WordPerfect or Microsoft Word; contestants that do not comply
with this requirement will not be considered and their works will be returned.
·Deadline for receipt of entries: February 1, 2001.
Winners will be chosen
in March 2001 and announced publicly in August. The awards will be presented
during the IAPA 57th General Assembly in Washington D.C., U.S.A., in October
2001. IAPA member publications will be sent application forms and full details
of the various awards by mail. Copies may also be obtained by contacting

Entries for the IAPA
Awards may be submitted without an accompanying
