IAPA INAUGURATES NEW LIBRARY AT HEADQUARTERS

17 de enero de 2001 - 18:00

Miami (January 18) - The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) will be celebrating tomorrow evening the inauguration of "The Freedom Forum Library" located at the organizations headquarters at the Jules Dubois Building, 1801 S.W. 3rd Avenue, Miami, Florida.

The Freedom Forum Library - funded by the organization carrying the same name - will house one of the largest collections of books, periodicals, and reference materials on freedom of the press and of expression in the Western Hemisphere. The Freedom Forum is a nonpartisan, international foundation located in Arlington, Virginia dedicated to free press, free speech and free spirit for all people.

The inauguration will begin promptly at 8:00 p.m. with special presentations by IAPA President Danilo Arbilla, Búsqueda, Montevideo, Uruguay, and Charles Overby, Chairman & CEO of The Freedom Forum. They will then proceed to the ribbon-cutting joined by Joe Carollo, Mayor of the City of Miami; Bruno Barreiro, Commissioner of Miami-Dade County, Alan Neuharth, founder of The Freedom Forum, and Chris Wells, Senior Vice President of The Freedom Forums International Division. Father Albert Cutié, priest of St. Patrick Church in Miami Beach and host of Telemundos talk show Padre Alberto, will close the ceremony with a benediction.

The IAPA President Danilo Arbilla remarked, "When the IAPA began thinking about the idea of moving to a new, more spacious headquarters, we always wanted to have a library that would serve as a center for all those documents that are essential to our work." He added, "The Freedom Forum has always been a supporter of the IAPA in our fight for freedom of the press. Since their beginning in 1992, they have supported us on different levels, by participating in our many seminars and conferences, by sponsoring many events and activities, and now, by creating this library."

The library will provide access to Internet services and online databases, and materials will be available in English and Spanish. The library will be open to the public and a full-time librarian will be on-site to assist in research and data-gathering on press freedom issues.

The Freedom Forum has had a long partnership with the IAPA. "Miami is the center for so much activity involving Latin America, so we hope this library will be a significant resource for journalists from the Latin American media," said The Freedom Forum Chairman Charles L. Overby.

Both IAPA and The Freedom Forum are pleased to be able join hands in providing these much needed resources and assistance to Latin American journalists. If you have any questions about tomorrows inauguration, please contact the IAPA headquarters at (305) 634-2465, or send us an e-mail at [email protected].
