IAPA calls for 2004 Awards entries

MIAMI, Florida (January 30, 2004)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) renewed a call today for journalists in the estern Hemisphere to submit entries for the IAPA 2004 Awards for excellence in journalism before the deadline, February 6.

Hundreds of entries are received each year from news men and women throughout the Americas vying for top honors in a number of categories, said Willliam E. Casey, Jr., of Dow Jones & Co., New York, chairman of the IAPA’s Awards Committee.

“For entrants this is an opportunity to obtain international recognition of their work,” Casey said, “as well as financial reward for the winners, and it is also an excellent occasion for the judges – the editors of leading news media – to highlight the quality of journalism in the hemisphere.”

The contest includes such categories as reporting on inter-American relations, human rights, spot news, in-depth coverage, photography, info graphics, cartoons, opinion pieces and the newspaper in education. Works submitted must have been published previously in print media in any of the three official IPA languages – English, Spanish and Portuguese.

In addition to its awards for journalistic excellence, the IAPA also will give its Grand Prize for Press Freedom to the person, ersons or groups that have done most during the year in defense of freedom of the press.

Winners will be chosen during the IAPA’s Midyear Meeting, to be held in Los Cabos, Mexico, March 12-15 and the awards will be presented during the Association’s General Assembly in Antigua, Guatemala, in October.
