IAPA PROTESTS LACK OF PUNISHMENT IN MURDER OF ARGENTINE JOURNALIST

18 de enero de 2004 - 18:00
MIAMI, Florida (January 19, 2004)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today called on newspaper and magazine readers throughout the Western Hemisphere to add their signatures to a public letter addressed to Argentine Secretary for Human Rights Eduardo Luis Duhalde seeking his help to solve the murder of Mario Bonino, press secretary Buenos Aires Press Workers Union (UTPBA). His body was found floating in the River Plate in November 1993.

At the time the Argentine government regarded Bonino’s death as a suicide, but forensic experts promptly denied this. Two consecutive investigations have yielded no suspects and inquiries have stalled, despite please by the UTPBA and the fact that a former police officer stated on local television and later in a newspaper interview that he had information about who had killed Bonino, naming police officers. More than 10 years since Bonino’s death the case remains unsolved.

The IAPA is waging a hemisphere-wide campaign, “Let US Put an End to Impunity,” for the 277 murders of journalists in the past 15 years not to continue to go unpunished. Interactive ads are being published in more than 200 newspapers and magazines throughout the Americas inviting readers to join the campaign by going to the Web site www.impunidad.com and adding their signatures to a petition.

The IAPA’s anti-impunity campaign, which is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, also includes investigative reporting programs, training for reporters working in hazardous areas and a monitoring of the state of press freedom in the Americas.
