Miami (April 16, 2004).- The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) placed on
its impunity website an investigation on the status of legal proceedings in 51
cases of journalists killed in Colombia from 1993 to 2003.
From the Colombian investigation, which also found that motives for some crimes
were not related to journalism activities, the IAPA updated statistics on murdered
journalists throughout the Western Hemisphere. You can find data on this website
under the “Murdered Journalists” link.
According to the investigation conducted in Colombia by the IAPA’s Rapid
Response Unit (RRU), in 2003, there were 99 cases of journalists killed, 51
related to their work in journalism, 16 had unknown motives, and 32 were murdered
for reasons unrelated to their profession.
The document, available at www.impunidad.com/procesoscolombia,
also shows that official investigations rarely mention the masterminds of the
crimes.
