Meetings begin to review files in Hector Felix Miranda case in Mexico

19 de abril de 2004 - 20:00
Remembering the 16th Anniversary of his Murder

Miami (April 20, 2004).- Representatives from the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) and the Attorney General’s Office of Baja California, Mexico, will meet on Friday to begin reviewing the files on the Hector Felix Miranda case, the hemispheric organization announced today on the sixteenth anniversary of the journalist’s murder.

On April 20, 1998, Felix Miranda was killed in Tijuana, Baja California, when he was working at Zeta; a weekly where he was co-editor. Two individuals were sentenced as the actual killers, but nobody has been charged for ordering his murder.

Following an IAPA investigation into his murder, the case was presented to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, in 1997, and since that date has acted as an intermediary between the IAPA and the Mexican government to urge a follow-up to the investigations on this murder and identifying those responsible for planning it.

Last March 17, IAPA representatives and the Government of Mexico formed a working group to jointly review and analyze the official investigation and legal proceedings in the case. The first meeting to determine a calendar of activities will be held this Friday in Tijuana.

The document, known as “Terms of Reference: Working Group on the Review of Files”, also includes the case of Víctor Manuel Oropeza, columnist from Diario de Juárez, in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, killed on July 3, 1991.

At the meeting, the IAPA will be represented by Roberto Rock, El Universal, Mexico City, and Ricardo Trotti, Press Freedom director.
