Lectoría y ética periodística temas destacados de la SIP en Guatemala
Miami (19 de octubre del 2004).- El estudio sobre las experiencias que motivan e inhiben a los lectores de diarios, será una de las presentaciones especiales en el marco de la asamblea general de la Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) a celebrase del 22 al 26 de octubre en Antigua, Guatemala.
El destacado catedrático estadounidense, John Lavine, de la Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, dará a conocer los resultados del estudio sobre lectoría, durante una exposición el sábado 23 de octubre en la sede de la reunión de la SIP, en el hotel Casa Santo Domingo de la ciudad colonial de Antigua, que reunirá a más de 450 editores, directores y periodistas de medios escritos del hemisferio occidental.
El Instituto de Prensa, brazo de la SIP encargado de la capacitación periodística, organizó de manera paralela a las reuniones oficiales, cuatro seminarios que abordarán temas sobre la actitud mental para el mercadeo, experiencias exitosas sobre nuevos productos, distintos usos para el Internet y sobre cómo crear una nueva cultura en el periódico.
Además de la revisión del tema principal de la reunión, el comportamiento de la libertad de prensa en las Américas en el último semestre, se presentarán los paneles Censura y cámaras ocultas, Líneas de autocontrol periodístico y Libertad de prensa y derechos humanos.
El domingo 24 se ofrecerá una exposición sobre culturas prehispánicas maya e inca a cargo de historiadoras especialista en el tema y ese mismo día la Premio Nóbel de la Paz, Rigoberto Menchú dictará una conferencia magistral.
Aunque la asamblea de la SIP inicia sus actividades este viernes 22, la inauguración oficial está prevista para el lunes 25 de octubre con la asistencia especial de los presidentes Oscar Berger de Guatemala y Elías Antonio Saca de El Salvador.

Readership and News Ethics: IAPA Highlights in Guatemala
Miami (October 19, 2004).- A study on experiences that promote and encourage new readers of newspapers will be one of the special presentations at the General Assembly of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) to be held on October 22-26, in Antigua, Guatemala
American scholar, John Lavine, from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, will present the results of the readership study during a presentation on Saturday, October 23, at the headquarters of the IAPA meeting, the Casa Santo Domingo Hotel, in the colonial city of Antigua, to be attended by 450 editors, publishers, and journalists from the written media from throughout the Western Hemisphere.
The Press Institute, responsible for IAPA training of journalists, has organized four seminars that will deal with issues, such as peoples mindset on marketing, new product success stories, different uses of the Internet, and how to create a new newspaper culture.
Besides reviewing the main topic of the meeting, the situation of press freedom in the Americas during the past six months, there will be panels on Censorship and Hidden Cameras, Lines of Self-Control in News, and Press Freedom and Human Rights.
On Sunday, October 24, there will be a presentation on the pre-Columbian Maya and Inca heritages by historians specializing in the subject, and that same day Nobel Peace Prize winner, Rigoberta Menchú, will give a keynote address.
Although the IAPA Assembly begins its activities on Friday, October 22, the Official Inauguration is scheduled for Monday, October 24, with speeches by Presidents Oscar Berger of Guatemala and Elías Antonio Saca of El Salvador
