Revisa la SIP situación sobre libertad de prensa en las Américas
Miami (9 de marzo del 2005).- La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) revisará la situación de la libertad de prensa en el hemisferio occidental, durante su reunión semestral que se inicia el próximo viernes en Panamá con la participación de más de 350 participantes.
La ceremonia de apertura estará a cargo de los presidentes Martín Torrijos, de Panamá y Alvaro Uribe, de Colombia, cuyos discursos serán pronunciados el domingo 13 de marzo, aunque los trabajos de la reunión de Medio Año se inician el 11 de marzo y se extienden hasta el día 14.
Editores, directores y periodistas, del continente coincidirán en Ciudad de Panamá, donde la SIP también celebrará paneles sobre principios periodísticos, avances de la jurisprudencia en favor de la libertad de prensa y medios cibernéticos exitosos. Asimismo, se ofrecerán seminarios que abordarán la tendencia de los periódicos tabloides y el diario al servicio de la educación; así como presentaciones especiales sobre Panamá e historia del Perú.
La violación de secreto profesional y el encarcelamiento periodistas en Estados Unidos; el asesinato y las agresiones contra periodistas en Brasil, Colombia, Haití, México, Nicaragua, República Dominicana, entre otros países; los proyectos de ley de acceso a la información, así como las medidas judiciales y económicas que restringen la actividad periodística, serán algunos de los temas a debatir durante la reunión.
La reunión de medio año, es uno de los dos encuentros anuales de la SIP para analizar el comportamiento de la libertad de prensa en las Américas y definir políticas organizativas.
IAPA reviews status of press freedom in the Americas
Miami (March 9, 2005).- The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) will review the situation on press freedom in the Western Hemisphere during its bi-annual meeting that begins on Friday with the participation of more than 350 delegates.
The opening ceremony will be attended by presidents Martin Torrijos of Panama and Alvaro Uribe of Colombia, who will deliver their speeches on Sunday, March 13, although the working sessions of the Midyear Meeting start on March 11 and will continue thru March 14.
Editors, publishers, and journalists from throughout the Americas will meet in Panama City, Panama, where the IAPA also will hold panels on news principles, advances in case law on press freedom, and successful electronic media. Also, seminars will be offered on the trend towards tabloid newspapers and newspapers at the service of education, as well as special presentations on Panama and ancient traditions in Peru.
Violations against the protection of sources and the imprisonment of journalists in the United States; murders and attacks against journalists in Brazil, Colombia, Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, among other countries; legislative bills on access to information; and legal and economic measures that restrict journalism, will be some of the topics discussed at the meeting.
The Midyear Meeting is one of two IAPA annual meetings to analyze the situation on freedom of the press in the Americas and determine the organizations reaction and policies.
