La SIP pide al presidente de Paraguay impulsar investigación en crimen contra periodista
Miami (20 de julio, 2005).- En otro paso de su campaña continental destinada a crear conciencia para esclarecer asesinatos impunes de periodistas, la Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) pidió hoy al presidente de Paraguay, Nicanor Duarte Frutos, su intervención para que se acelere el proceso de investigación en torno a la muerte del periodista Salvador Medina Velásquez.
Medina tenía 27 años cuando lo asesinaron, el 5 de enero de 2001 en Capiibary, departamento de San Pedro, Paraguay, después de denunciar, a través de una radioemisora comunitaria, actos de corrupción. A pesar de que el autor del crimen fue arrestado y condenado a 25 años de cárcel, la sentencia aún espera la confirmación de la Corte Suprema. Testigos aseguran que hay más gente involucrada en el asesinato.
En los últimos 17 años, han sido asesinados 287 periodistas en el continente. A través de anuncios publicitarios en más de 300 publicaciones del hemisferio occidental, la SIP está invitando a los lectores a adherir, a través de la página de internet www.impunidad.com, a la campaña Acabemos con la impunidad de crímenes contra profesionales de la prensa.
La campaña desarrollada cuenta con el apoyo financiero de la Fundación John S y James L. Knight e incluye programas de investigación periodística, entrenamiento para periodistas en zonas de riesgo y el monitoreo de la situación de la libertad de prensa en las Américas.
IAPA Calls for More Action in Disappearance of Paraguayan Journalist
MIAMI, Florida (July 20. 2005)The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) called on newspaper and magazine readers in the Western Hemisphere to add their signatures to a public letter sent to Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte Frutos requesting his help to solve the murdered of journalist Salvador Medina Velásquez.
He was 27 years old when on January 5, 2001, he was shot to death in Capiibary, San Pedro province, Paraguay, after exposing corruption in broadcast from community radio station. Although the person who carried out the attach was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison, the sentence has yet to be upheld by the Supreme Court. Witnesses say there are more people involved in the murder.
The IAPA is waging a hemisphere-wide campaign, titled Let Us Put an End to Impunity, for those responsible for the murder of 287 journalists in the last 17 years not to continue to go unpunished. Interactive ads are being published in more than three hundreds newspapers and magazines throughout the Americas, inviting readers to join the campaign by adding their signatures to a petition posed on the Web site www.impunidad.com
The IAPAs hemisphere-wide campaign against impunity, which is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, also includes investigative reporting programs, training for reporters working in hazardous environments, and the monitoring of the state of press freedom in the Americas.
