Abordarán en la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos asesinato contra periodista
Miami (18 de octubre del 2005).- Una delegación de la Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) sostendrá este miércoles una reunión de trabajo con representantes del gobierno de Colombia en la sede de la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH) en Washington, DC, para discutir el asesinato del periodista Nelson Carvajal, caso que la organización hemisférica considera que permanece en la impunidad.
La misión de la SIP estará dirigida por su recién electa presidenta, Diana Daniels, del The Washington Post Company, Washington, DC, quien junto al director de Libertad de Prensa de la institución, Ricardo Trotti, participarán en la reunión convocada por la CIDH en el marco de su 123º período ordinario de sesiones.
Carvajal, periodista y educador, fue asesinado el 16 de abril de 1998 en Pitalito, Huila, Colombia. El crimen habría tenido como móvil las críticas del periodista a la corrupción política en el municipio. Era director del Noticiero Momento Regional, de las radio revistas Mirador de la Semana, Amanecer en el Campo y Tribuna Médica de la Emisora Radio Sur.
La Unidad de Respuesta Rápida (URR) de la SIP investigó el asesinato, cuyo resultado fue sometido a la CIDH el 21de junio del 2001. Desde esa fecha y hasta el presente se realizaron acciones destinadas a avanzar en el caso, entre ellas: presentaciones ante el organismo interamericano, investigaciones de campo, recopilación de testimonios, revisión del expediente judicial, respuestas al Estado colombiano y consultas a familiares de la víctima.
La delegación de la SIP aprovechará su encuentro en la CIDH para someter al organismo el caso del periodista brasileño Mário de Almeida Coelho Filho, reportero, fotógrafo y director administrativo del periódico A Verdade, quien por denunciar el abuso y malversación de fondos públicos habría sido asesinado el 16 de agosto de 2001, en la ciudad de Magé, estado de Río de Janeiro. Una investigación de la URR de la SIP en Brasil detectó irregularidades en el proceso judicial.
La SIP inició su proyecto Crímenes Sin Castigo Contra Periodistas en 1995 y a través de la URR ha investigado 57 casos de asesinatos en Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haití, México, Paraguay, Perú y Uruguay, de los cuales ha presentado 18 ante la CIDH hasta la fecha y 10 han sido admitidos.

Discussion at Inter-American Commission on Human Rights HQ will focus on murder of journalist
MIAMI, Florida (October 18, 2005)A delegation from the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) is scheduled to meet Wednesday with representatives of the Colombian government at the headquarters in Washington, D.C., of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to discuss the murder of Colombian journalist Nelson Carvajal, which the IAPA says continues to go unpunished.
The IAPA mission is headed by its recently-elected president, Diana Daniels, of The Washington Post Company, Washington, D.C., who, together with IAPA Press Freedom Director Ricardo Trotti will take part in the meeting called by the IACHR within the framework of its current 123rd ordinary session.
Carvajal a journalist and teacher, was killed on April 16, 1998 in Pitalito, Huila province, Colombia. The motive was believed to have been his exposures of corruption in the local city government. He was host of the radio news program Noticiero Momento Regional and of the magazine-style shows Mirador de la Semana, Amanecer en el Campo and Tribuna Médica, broadcast by the Emisora Radio Sur radio station.
The IAPAs Rapid Response Unit investigated the murder and its findings were submitted to the IACHR on June 21, 2001. Since then the IAPA has carried out a number of actions aimed at moving the case forward, including making presentations to the IACHR, staging on-site investigations, gathering testimonies, reviewing the case file, providing responses to the Colombian state, and having consultations with the victims family.
The IAPA delegation will take the opportunity of its visit to the IACHR to submit to it another case, that of Brazilian journalist Mário de Almeida Coelho Filho, a reporter, photographer and executive editor of the newspaper A Verdade, who was murdered on August 16, 2001, in Magé city, Rio de Janeiro state, apparently for having exposed misappropriation of public funds. An investigation in Brazil by the IAPAs Rapid Response Unit uncovered irregularities in the judicial process.
The IAPA launched its Unpunished Crimes Against Journalists project in 1995 and through its Rapid Response Unit, has investigated 57 murder cases in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica., Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay, of which it has submitted 18 to the IACHR, 10 of which were accepted.
