SIP solicita reunión con autoridades de Venezuela / IAPA seeks meeting with Venezuelan officials

Inicialmente la SIP había solicitado un encuentro con el presidente Hugo Chávez y con el vicepresidente José Vicente Rangel para este próximo 5 de mayo, pero debido a compromisos previos, la visita a Venezuela fue postergada. Tras reiterar el interés de que ambas autoridades puedan recibir a una delegación internacional de la SIP, fue presentada una nueva propuesta de reunión para el 22 de junio.

De confirmarse las reuniones solicitadas a las más altas autoridades del gobierno de Venezuela, la delegación internacional de la SIP estará encabezada por su presidenta, Diana Daniels, del The Washington Post Company y por el presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información, Gonzalo Marroquín, del diario guatemalteco Prensa Libre, a quienes se sumarían otros representantes de diarios del hemisferio, miembros de la organización.

Esta iniciativa responde a una resolución emanada de la pasada Reunión de Medio Año de la SIP, celebrada en Quito del 17 al 20 de marzo, en la que se aprobó “enviar a Venezuela una misión internacional para recabar mayor información sobre la situación actual de libertad de expresión y de prensa en el país y así dar continuidad a las numerosas misiones anteriores que la institución ha enviado a Venezuela durante el actual gobierno”.

IAPA seeks meeting on press freedom issues with Venezuelan officials

MIAMI, Florida (April 28, 2006)—The Inter American Press Association today asked Venezuelan government leaders to meet with its representatives on June 22 to discuss press freedom issues, in line with a decision made during the organization’s recent meeting in Quito, Ecuador.

The IAPA had earlier sought a May 5 meeting with Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez and Vice President José Vicente Rangel, but the trip to Venezuela was postponed. Saying it still hoped the officials would receive an international delegation from the IAPA, the organization suggested the June date.

If confirmed, the delegation will be headed by IAPA’s president, Diana Daniels, of The Washington Post company, Washington, D.C., and the chairman of its Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Gonzalo Marroquín, editor of the Guatemala City, Guatemala newspaper Prensa Libre. Also joining the group will be representatives of other member newspapers from throughout the Americas.

The initiative stems from a resolution adopted at the IAPA’s Midyear Meeting in Quito March 17-20 “to send an international mission to Venezuela to collect further information on the current status of freedom of expression and press freedom in the country, and thereby follow up on the many previous IAPA missions to Venezuela during the current administration.”
