IAPA to send mission to Dominican Republic

21 de agosto de 2003 - 20:00
MIAMI, Florida (August 22, 2003)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) announced today it will send a mission to the Dominican Republic next week to give support to the Editora Listín Diario publishing company there that a judge has ruled must be restored to its owners.

IAPA Legal Affairs Committee Chairman Héctor Dávalos, of Novedades de Acapulco, Mexico, and the chairman of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Rafael Molina, editor of the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, news magazine Ahora, will meet with senior representatives of the judiciary to discuss the case of the company, which publishes the newspapers Listín Diario, Ultima Hora, Expreso and El Financiero.

Editora Listín Diairo, radio and television stations and a number of other businesses connected to the Dominican Republic bank Banco Intercontinental were placed in official receivership after the Central Bank alleged financial irregularities in the bank, whose majority shareholders have been accused of multi-million-dollar fraud.

A judge ruled in July that the seizure of the news media was unconstitutional and ordered their immediate restoration to their owners – an order that has not yet been complied with.
