8 de julio de 2004 - 20:00
Miami (July 9, 2004).- Journalists from newspapers in Colombia and Guatemala will participate next week in two Seminar-Workshops organized by the Inter American Press Association on Journalism at Risk, as part of the institution’s program to fight impunity and prevent crimes against journalists.

The seminars, to be attended by an estimated 60 reporters and photographers, will take place in the respective capitals of each country with sponsorship from local newspapers.

The seminar on July 12-14 in Bogotá, will discuss among other issues the journalist’s responsibility when facing risks and errors, coverage in conflict zones, diversity of risks, risks for investigative reporters, the threat of corruption, journalists and politics, journalism and the armed forces, etc. During the opening session, a presentation will be made by chairman of the IAPA “Journalists-at-Risk Committee,” Enrique Santos Calderón, editor of El Tiempo newspaper.

In Guatemala City, the training will take place on July 15-16, and will be led by Argentine expert Sibila Camps, who will identify the many kinds of risks to which journalists are exposed (physical, psychological, social, ethical) and the circumstances that cause them, with guidelines on how to minimize them and how face them as a last resort.

Both programs, which follow the planning of the IAPA’s “Journalists-at-Risk” and “Against Impunity” committees, are funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
