JUST TWO WEEKS TO DEADLINE FOR 2007 IAPA AWARDS ENTRIES

MIAMI, Florida (January 15)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) announced today that just two weeks remain before the deadline for entries for its 2007 Awards for Excellence in Journalism.

The awards contest each year attracts the best and brightest of journalism in the Western Hemisphere. Publications and news agencies in some 33 nations in the Americas and the Caribbean submit their best works in English, Spanish or Portuguese. The deadline for entries is midnight, February 1, 2007.

This year a new online mechanism and entry rules have been added to facilitate participation. So far a total of 80 entries have been submitted.

The adjudication panel will review the entries and choose 10 finalists and a winner in each of the 11 categories during the IAPA’s Midyear Meeting in Cartagena, Colombia, in March. The winners will be presented with certificates and cash prizes during the organization’s General Assembly in Miami, Florida, in October.

The 11 awards categories are: inter-American relations; human rights; news coverage; features; in-depth reporting; photography; cartoons; infographics; opinion; the newspaper in education, and best online news coverage. In addition the IAPA awards its Grand Prize for Press Freedom to a person or organization showing significant achievements on behalf of the cause of freedom of the press.

The call for entries and contest rules may be obtained from the IAPA’s Web site, www.sipiapa.org/awards.
It is not necessary to be an IAPA member to participate.
